The new synthetic turf soccer pitch at Falkirk FC has a ProGame 7010 XC Trocellen shock pad
Specifying the best
The surface that has been installed by Greenfields (Allsports) UK Ltd, is a GreenFields MX Trimension synthetic turf system, powered by TenCate Grass. GreenFields MX pitches are currently used in the Dutch Premier League at Heracles Almelo and PEC Zwolle and in several stadium pitches in the Dutch First Division.
Compared to the tufting method used in current installations, the patented weaving technique enables higher density, higher resilience, less compaction and a more equal ball roll. The weaving production process makes it possible to jointly use materials from the same product family (polypropylene and polyethylene). This means that it is possible for multiple key characteristics to support the system; for instance, the product is fully recyclable and meets FIFA standards, thanks to the freedom of design and use of materials.
The surface has been specifically designed for football, with 50mm tufts having a closed cell polyethylene ProGame 7010 XC Trocellen shock pad, compared with traditional systems for football and rugby with 65mm tufts. The pitch is of course fully FIFA 2-star compliant and conforms to the rules laid down by the SPL and SFL.
The use of the ProGame shock pad – manufactured by the European crosslinked PE foam producer Trocellen – is an excellent choice, as it combines very high performances with easy and fast installation as well as durability in all weather conditions.
In the Dutch Premier League the feedback from the players and coaching staff of Heracles Almelo and PEC Zwolle has been very positive. Falkirk FC sent Head Coach, Gary Holt, out to these two clubs in the Netherlands in early May and he came back enthusiastic about the playing surface, claiming it to be remarkably better than any artificial surface he had used in the UK.
Falkirk FC appointed Professional Sportsturf Design Scotland (PSD) as PLAY SYNTHETIC TURF consultants to manage the tendering process, advise on the best installation and oversee the installation.
GreenFields was chosen from five companies that submitted tenders.
Bill Gillespie of PSD says: “ The benefit of the woven product is the ability of the carpet pile to stand upright, allowing players to get their boot under the ball, and the durability of the product due to the strength of the system – it is almost impossible to withdraw yarn from the pile. A combination of yarns has been used in this system, making it a much more comfortable surface for the players.”
The pitch will be used for all First Team and U20 games. It will also be used by these squads for training purposes, allowing them to relocate to Falkirk from their base at Stirling University. It will also be used by the charitable arm of the club, the Falkirk Football Community Foundation, for football coaching courses. The Academy, which is in the process of being integrated into the newly formed Forth Valley Regional Academy, will continue to be based at Stirling University.
